Mudhol is a town in Bagalkot district, northern Karnataka, on the Ghataprabha river. On a map, the river is the defining line: a long, meandering band crossing a wide plain of cultivated land. The town sits beside it, with an older, tighter centre of narrow lanes giving way to broader, more regular streets on its outer edges.
The name reaches well beyond the region for two reasons. Mudhol was once the seat of a princely state ruled by the Ghorpade family, and that past still shapes the old core of the town. It is also the home of the Mudhol Hound, a lean sighthound bred in the area for centuries and now recognised across India.
