Murakami lies in the far north of Niigata Prefecture, between the Sea of Japan and the mountains along the border with Yamagata. The old centre is a former castle town, and its plan still shows the split between samurai quarters and merchant streets below Gagyu-san, the wooded hill where the castle stood. Stone walls still stand on the summit.
The Miomote River runs past the town to the sea and has shaped local life for centuries. Murakami is known for its salmon culture, including a long tradition of looking after the returning fish, and for salmon hung to dry under the eaves of houses. The town is also often described as the northern limit of commercial tea growing in Japan.
