Nailsea is a town in North Somerset, a short distance west of Bristol. Its map has a soft, organic outline: rather than a strict grid, the streets follow old lanes and loop into quiet residential closes. A pedestrianised shopping centre sits near the middle, and from there roads fan out toward the surrounding countryside, with the railway running just to the south.
The land around the town is low and open, crossed by drainage ditches, known locally as rhynes, that show up as thin, straight lines across the fields. Nailsea's past is industrial as well as rural: it was known for glassmaking in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and coal was mined here, though today the town is mostly residential.
