Nomi lies on the Kaga plain in Ishikawa Prefecture, south of Kanazawa and a short distance inland from the Sea of Japan. From above, it looks like a mix of rice paddies, small residential districts and straight connecting roads. The land begins to rise toward wooded hills in the east. The Tedori River, one of the region's main rivers, flows nearby to the north.
The area is closely linked with Kutani ware, the richly painted porcelain of southern Ishikawa, and pottery workshops remain part of local life. Nomi is also home to the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, a graduate research university set on the higher ground at the city's edge.
