Patiya lies in Chittagong district in southeastern Bangladesh, south of the port city of Chittagong. The land around it is a low, fertile plain crossed by canals, streams and paddy fields, rising to the east into forested hills. The town sits where these two landscapes meet, with a busy centre of markets and roads and villages spreading out across the surrounding farmland.
A main road runs south through the area, connecting Chittagong with Cox's Bazar and the southern coast, and Patiya has long served as a commercial and educational centre for the villages around it. The combination of waterways, hills and closely settled farmland is typical of this part of Bangladesh, and on a map it creates a detailed, varied pattern.
