Qalqīlyah lies at the western edge of the West Bank, where the hills slope down towards the coastal plain and the Mediterranean is only a short distance away. The town is compact and dense. On a map its streets form a tight cluster, with a few main roads leading out, and the built-up area gives way abruptly to agricultural land.
The surrounding fields and orchards have long been central to local life, and the area has a reputation for fruit and vegetable growing. The town is also known for its zoo, which for many years has been the only one in the West Bank. The separation barrier encloses much of the town, and its line is visible on the map around the edge of the urban area.
