Rewa sits on the plateau of northeastern Madhya Pradesh, in the historic region of Baghelkhand. From above, the town reads as a dense older core with tightly packed lanes. Around it is a looser ring of newer colonies and institutions, with main roads reaching out towards the farmland. Two modest rivers, the Bichhiya and the Beehar, thread through the town and bend the street pattern around them.

For several centuries Rewa was the seat of a princely state ruled by the Baghel dynasty, and the old fort still stands near the meeting of its two rivers. The region is also known around the world for the white tiger. Mohan, the first white tiger to be recorded, was captured in the forests near Rewa in 1951 and became the ancestor of many white tigers now in zoos.
