Santa Maria sits almost exactly at the geographic centre of Rio Grande do Sul, which is why it is often called the heart of the state. From above it reads as a compact downtown on uneven ground, surrounded by neighbourhoods that spread across gentle hills. To the north the land rises toward the edge of the plateau, and green slopes begin to press in on the streets.
The city grew as a railway junction, and old rail alignments still cut across parts of the map. It is also known as a university town. The Federal University of Santa Maria, founded in 1960, was the first federal university in Brazil established outside a state capital. Its campus forms a large, distinct area on the city's outskirts.
The streets follow a loose grid that bends where hills and streams demand it.
