Sarāvān lies in Sistan and Baluchestan province, close to Iran's border with Pakistan, and is one of the main towns of the Baluch region. Its map reflects life in a dry landscape. A compact centre of closely packed streets is surrounded by farmland and groves that depend on scarce water, and beyond them wide stretches of empty ground reach toward the hills.
The town is a market and administrative centre for a large rural district. Date palms and other crops grow in the surrounding area wherever there is enough water. On a map these green areas appear as irregular patches around the streets, a quiet contrast with the bare land further out, where only a few roads and tracks cross the open ground.
