Torreón is the main city of the Comarca Lagunera, an irrigated farming region in the arid north of Mexico. It grew around the railway at the end of the nineteenth century and became a city in 1907, which explains its strikingly regular grid of wide, straight streets. Across the Nazas River, usually a dry sandy bed, lie Gómez Palacio and Lerdo in the state of Durango.

The three cities form one continuous metropolitan area divided by a state line, a relationship that is easy to read on a map. West of the centre, the Cerro de las Noas rises above the streets, topped by the Cristo de las Noas, one of the tallest statues of Christ in Latin America. Beyond the city, fields and desert ranges stretch toward the horizon.
