Tsu is the capital of Mie Prefecture and lies along the western shore of Ise Bay. On the map it forms a long band running north to south, with the coastline on one side and the rising ground of the interior on the other. Several rivers cross this band from west to east, cutting the city into sections before they reach the sea.
The city's name is often noted as one of the shortest place names in Japan, written in Japanese with a single kana character. Its historic core grew around Tsu Castle, whose moat and stone walls survive in a park near the centre. Around that core, streets settle into a modest grid, with railway lines running parallel to the coast and linking the city to Nagoya and Osaka.
