Uran is in Raigad district, on the mainland shore of Mumbai Harbour, facing the city across the water. Its map is a mix of wet and dry land. Tidal creeks and mangroves wind inland, salt pans and flat reclaimed ground spread along the shore, and low green hills rise behind the town. The older town centre is a compact grid of lanes set back from the water.
The area has changed a great deal in recent decades. The container port at Nhava Sheva, one of the largest in India, lies nearby, and its long wharves, terminals and container yards form huge rectangles on the map. Wide roads and rail lines connect the port to the rest of the region. Elephanta Island, known for its cave temples, sits in the harbour not far offshore.

Between them are creeks, marsh and water, which on paper become flowing, irregular shapes. Tidal creeks wind through the low land around the town, edged with mangroves and salt pans. They add winding, organic lines between the straight roads and wharves.
