Urayasu sits in the north-western corner of Chiba Prefecture, on Tokyo Bay, just across the Old Edogawa River from Tokyo. Its map tells the story of land reclamation. Near the river is a small original fishing town. To the south lie large new districts on reclaimed land, with broad avenues, planned blocks and straight artificial shorelines.
The oldest part of the city, around the former fishing settlement, still has narrow, winding lanes and small waterways. They stand out against the regular grid of the newer areas. Toward the bay, the planned districts are spacious, with parks, schools and housing estates laid out in wide superblocks along the coast.
Urayasu is best known as the home of Tokyo Disney Resort. The resort occupies a large area of reclaimed land in Maihama, where its lagoons and road loops form a distinctive shape. The Urayasu map poster shows a city defined by engineering and water, with the edge of Tokyo Bay drawn in clean geometric lines.
