Vénissieux borders Lyon to the southeast, and on the map the two run together without a visible break. Yet the town has its own structure: an older centre on lower ground, large industrial and rail zones to the west, and residential districts rising onto a plateau to the south. Wide boulevards and fast roads tie these parts together.
The plateau of Les Minguettes is the most striking area from above. Built in the 1960s and 1970s as one of the largest housing developments in the Lyon region, it shows up as long building footprints and open ground arranged in very large blocks. It contrasts sharply with the tighter streets of the old centre below.
Vénissieux has a long industrial history, including the truck and vehicle factories Berliet established here, today part of Renault Trucks. Metro line D and a tram line link the town to central Lyon.
