Worcester is often called the city of seven hills, and its street map shows it. Instead of a single grid, neighbourhoods follow ridges and valleys, with main roads converging on a compact downtown in a low basin. Lake Quinsigamond, long and narrow, forms most of the eastern boundary, separating Worcester from Shrewsbury.
Interstate 290 cuts through the centre in a sweeping curve beside the downtown blocks, and older rail lines follow the valley floor. The Blackstone River begins here, formed where local streams meet, and flows south toward Rhode Island along a corridor that powered some of the earliest industrial growth in the United States.
Worcester is a college city, home to Clark University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the College of the Holy Cross, each with its own campus pattern on the map.
