Zola Predosa lies just west of Bologna, where the flat land of the Po plain begins to lift into the hills. Its map has two distinct halves: a northern side of regular residential blocks, business districts and main roads, and a southern side where the streets thin out into winding lanes climbing toward vineyards and wooded slopes. The Lavino stream crosses the municipality, tracing a curving line from the hills toward the plain.

The town belongs to the Colli Bolognesi wine area, known for its Pignoletto, and its countryside holds a scattering of historic villas. The most striking is Palazzo Albergati, a large seventeenth-century residence standing among the fields, its long axial approach still readable from above. The railway toward Vignola and the old road running west from Bologna give the town its main east-west lines.
