Putuoshan sits in the Zhoushan archipelago off the coast of Zhejiang and is one of the four sacred mountains of Chinese Buddhism, venerated as the home of Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion. The island is only a few kilometres long, and its outline is irregular: a compact body pulled out into rocky points, with sheltered sand in between.
The drawing is shaped by pilgrimage. Roads and footpaths link the great monasteries, among them Puji and Fayu, and climb toward Foding, the highest hill, where Huiji Temple stands among trees. Along the east shore two long beaches, known as the Hundred-Step and Thousand-Step sands, form smooth curves against the otherwise jagged coast.
Because so much of the island is hillside, woodland and temple ground, the Putuoshan map poster is quiet and open, made of thin winding lines rather than dense blocks. Ferry piers and the narrow channel toward neighbouring Zhujiajian give the frame its edge, and the sea fills the rest, as it does for anyone arriving by boat.
