Riacho das Almas lies in the agreste of Pernambuco, the transitional belt between the humid coast and the dry sertão, a short distance north of Caruaru. The town is small, and on the map it appears as a tight cluster of streets surrounded by open, gently rolling land divided into fields and pasture.
The name means stream of the souls, and the town grew in a landscape where small watercourses and local reservoirs matter a great deal. From above, farm tracks spread in all directions from the built-up area, linking scattered rural properties to the centre. The main roads leading out toward neighbouring towns form the strongest lines.
