Ahilyanagar Map Poster & Print
Ahilyanagar, long known as Ahmednagar, was founded in 1494 by Ahmad Nizam Shah as the capital of a Deccan sultanate. Its name was changed to honour Ahilyabai Holkar, the eighteenth-century Maratha ruler. On the map the old city is a compact cluster of narrow streets, with the Sina river flowing along its edge.
East of the centre the fort stands out as a round, moated enclosure, clearly separate from the streets around it. During the independence movement, Jawaharlal Nehru and other leaders were imprisoned there. Nehru wrote The Discovery of India during that time.
An Ahilyanagar map poster also shows the military cantonment, laid out with wider roads and more open ground than the old city. Beyond it the city spreads into the dry plateau of central Maharashtra, with highways heading toward Pune, Aurangabad and Solapur.
