Ahrensburg lies just beyond Hamburg's northeastern edge in the Stormarn district, and U-Bahn trains run all the way out to it. Most of the town is a leafy commuter place of detached houses and curving residential streets. At its heart, though, sits a piece of deliberate planning that stands out clearly on any map.
Schloss Ahrensburg, a white Renaissance manor house from the late sixteenth century, stands in parkland on the town's southern side. In the eighteenth century the town centre was laid out in relation to the estate. Straight streets radiate in a goose-foot pattern, a layout that still gives the old centre a geometric order unusual for a town of its size.
