Al Jazeera Aba, known in English as Aba Island, lies in the White Nile in central Sudan, north of the twin towns of Kosti and Rabak. The island is long and narrow, stretching with the course of the river, and on a map its outline is defined entirely by water: channels of the Nile flowing along either side, with farmland and settlements between them.
The island holds a special place in Sudanese history. In 1881 Muhammad Ahmad declared himself the Mahdi here, beginning the movement that went on to take Khartoum a few years later. Aba remained a centre for his followers, the Ansar, and it is still closely associated with the Mahdist tradition.
