AlUla lies in the Medina Region of northwestern Saudi Arabia, in a long valley framed by sandstone cliffs and rock formations. An oasis of palm groves and farms runs along the valley floor, and the modern town has grown beside it. From above, the green strip of cultivation is sharply defined against the surrounding desert.
The area has been settled for thousands of years. Nearby Hegra, with its monumental Nabataean tombs cut into rock, became Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. The old town of AlUla, a dense maze of mudbrick houses and narrow lanes, sits on the edge of the oasis beneath a hilltop fortress.
