Alenquer lies in western Pará, on the northern side of the lower Amazon, not far from Santarém. From above, it is a town at the water's edge. The streets form a modest grid close to the riverbank, and the land around it is threaded with channels, lakes and floodplain that rise and fall with the seasons.
As in much of the Amazon, rivers are the main highways here. Boats connect Alenquer with Santarém and other towns along the river, and the rhythm of the annual flood shapes farming, fishing and daily life. The town is small and not widely documented, and its geography is best described by the map itself.
