Amami is the main city of Amami Ōshima, a subtropical island between Kyushu and Okinawa. Its centre, the old port town of Naze, lies around a sheltered bay, and from above the streets fill the narrow flat land between the water and steep, forested hills. Beyond the centre, the city stretches along a coastline of bays, inlets and small settlements.
The island is known for its subtropical forest, which in 2021 became part of a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, and for rare wildlife such as the Amami rabbit. Amami is also known for Ōshima tsumugi, a finely woven silk traditionally dyed with local mud. The island's culture has elements of both Kagoshima and Okinawa.
