Ami is a town in southern Ibaraki Prefecture on the southwestern shore of Lake Kasumigaura, the second-largest lake in Japan. The land here is flat to gently rolling. It is a patchwork of rice paddies, fields and small woods, with residential districts that have grown as the Tokyo commuter belt spread outward.
The town is known to many travellers for its large outlet mall near an expressway interchange. There is also a history of naval aviation training on the lakeshore, remembered in a local museum. Between these, the town is largely quiet: farm roads, scattered hamlets and newer housing estates on the higher ground.
