Anlong Map Poster
Anlong lies in the south-west of Guizhou province, in the Qianxinan region, in the middle of one of the world's great karst landscapes. On a map, the town fills a valley floor, with streets squeezed between steep limestone hills. Beyond them, cone-shaped peaks and small basins stretch in every direction.
The old centre is compact, and newer districts and roads have spread along the valley floors in the directions the terrain allows. Terraced fields and small villages sit in the hollows between the hills. Winding mountain roads link them, following the contours in long, looping curves.
The town has a notable place in Chinese history. In the 1650s it was briefly the seat of the Yongli Emperor, the last ruler of the Southern Ming, during his retreat from the Qing.
