Aqsu, often written Aksu, lies in western Xinjiang on the northern rim of the Tarim Basin, south of the Tian Shan mountains. Its name means white water, after the river that feeds the oasis. From above, the city appears as a planned urban core in a wide patchwork of irrigated farmland, with desert and gravel plains beyond.
Within the city, the main avenues run in fairly straight lines and the residential blocks are large and regular, typical of recent planning in the region. Canals and tree-lined channels carry water through and around the built-up area, and they show as thin lines on the map. At its edges the city fades gradually into fields, orchards and shelter belts.
The Aksu River is one of the main sources of the Tarim, the longest inland river in China, and the region is known for cotton, apples and jujubes.
