Athani lies in Belagavi district in the north of Karnataka, not far from the Maharashtra border. The land around it is flat, black-soil plain, part of the Deccan plateau, and the Krishna River flows through the wider area. The town has a compact centre of narrow streets and markets, and newer neighbourhoods stretch out along the roads that lead away from it.
Athani is the main town of its taluk and a trading hub for the farming villages around it. Sugarcane is an important crop in this part of Karnataka, and the local economy is closely tied to agriculture. The roads that meet in Athani connect it with other towns across the border region.
