Auburn sits on the western bank of the Androscoggin River in southern Maine, directly across from Lewiston. Together the two are known as the Twin Cities, linked by bridges near the Great Falls, where the river drops sharply. The falls powered the mills and shoe factories that made Auburn an industrial centre in the nineteenth century.
From above, the downtown clusters near the river, with older streets climbing the slope away from the water. Further out, the city becomes more spread out, with residential neighbourhoods, farmland and woodland. Lake Auburn, a large glacial lake to the north, supplies drinking water to both cities and forms a clear, broad shape on the map.
