Auchi lies in the north of Edo State, in the Etsako area, where the land begins to rise and roll. From above the town has no single grid. Its roads follow the ground, curving around rises and meeting at irregular junctions, while older neighbourhoods keep denser, closely built blocks near the centre.
The town is best known for Auchi Polytechnic, one of Nigeria's established technical institutions, whose campus is a large, clearly defined area on the map, with its own internal roads and open spaces. Auchi is also the seat of a traditional ruler, the Otaru of Auchi, and its old quarters reflect that long history of settlement.
