Augusta Map Poster & Print
Augusta lies on the east coast of Sicily, north of Syracuse. Its historic centre occupies a narrow island between two large bays, joined to the mainland by bridges. From above, the old town is a long, regular grid of streets running the length of the island, with the water close on both sides and the newer town spreading across the mainland.
The town was founded in 1232 by Emperor Frederick II, whose Swabian castle still guards the entrance to the island. Much of the centre was rebuilt after the major Sicilian earthquake of 1693, which explains its orderly layout. Today the bay is one of Italy's largest ports, surrounded by industrial installations, and the ancient Greek site of Megara Hyblaea lies nearby.
