Ausa is a town in Latur district, in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, and it lies on the broad, gently rolling surface of the Deccan plateau. From above, the settlement appears as a dense cluster of streets surrounded by a wide patchwork of fields, with roads leaving the center in several directions toward nearby villages and the district town of Latur.
The inner part of town has the close, irregular grain typical of older market settlements in the region, with narrow lanes, small blocks and buildings set tightly together. Further out the pattern opens into newer housing and wider roads. The surrounding taluka is agricultural, and on a map the fields and their boundaries give the edges of the town a fine, textured look.
The area is also remembered for the 1993 Latur earthquake, whose epicenter near Killari lay within Ausa taluka.
