Aylesbury is the county town of Buckinghamshire, set on a slight rise in the flat Vale of Aylesbury. From above, the town has a classic English structure: a compact historic core of lanes and small squares around St Mary's Church and the Market Square, enclosed by an inner ring road, with radial roads leading out to Oxford, Tring, Wendover, Buckingham and Bicester.
Beyond the ring, residential estates of different decades spread in curved streets and cul-de-sacs. The Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Canal reaches the town from the east, ending in a basin close to the centre, and small streams cross the surrounding farmland. The railway to London arrives from the south.
