Bad Kissingen follows the valley of the Franconian Saale in Lower Franconia, and the river is the spine of its map. The spa quarter sits right beside it, a sequence of gardens, paths and grand buildings that reads from above as a green band through the town, with older streets and wooded hills pressing in on either side.
Its mineral springs made it one of the most fashionable resorts of 19th-century Europe, visited by Empress Elisabeth of Austria, Tsar Alexander II and Otto von Bismarck, among many others. In 2021 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the Great Spa Towns of Europe, alongside Baden-Baden, Bath and Karlovy Vary.
