Baiguan lies in the south of Gansu province, in mountainous country where the western ranges of the Qinling approach the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. The terrain is steep and deeply cut by rivers, and settlements here usually follow the valley floors, where the only flat land for roads, fields and buildings is found.
