Bakhmut stands on the Bakhmutka River in Donetsk Oblast, in the rolling steppe of eastern Ukraine. Before the war, its map showed a compact centre on the river's banks, a regular grid of residential streets beyond, and industrial districts along the railway. Green space followed the small river valley, giving the city a soft spine through its middle.
The settlement grew up around salt production in the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and salt and gypsum mining remained part of its economy. The city's best-known product was sparkling wine, aged in old gypsum tunnels on its outskirts. From 1924 to 2016 it was called Artemivsk, before the historic name was restored.
In 2022 and 2023, Bakhmut was the site of one of the longest and most destructive battles of the war, and much of the city was ruined. A Bakhmut map poster preserves the street plan as it was, a record of a place that many people still call home and hope to rebuild.
