Baliwan lies in the east of Gansu province, in the loess hill country that surrounds the upper basin of the Wei River. This landscape is built of fine wind-blown soil, cut by erosion into countless ridges and gullies. For generations farmers have worked it into terraces, and those terraces give the map its most striking quality.
The town sits where the ground is flatter, along a valley floor. Its streets and blocks are compact and follow the valley's direction. Roads leaving the town rise onto the surrounding hills in winding lines. Beyond the built-up area, the map becomes almost pure texture: branching gullies and stepped terraced slopes.
