Balotra lies in the arid west of Rajasthan beside the Luni, the main river of the region, which flows only after the rains and for much of the year appears as a broad sandy channel. On a map the town forms a compact, irregular core with newer growth along the highway and railway, surrounded by scrub, fields and open desert land.
Balotra is best known for its textile industry, especially the dyeing and printing of cotton fabrics, which has made it one of the notable cloth centres of western India. The Jain pilgrimage site of Nakoda lies nearby, and the town serves as the market for a wide rural area around it.
