Bam Map Poster
Bam lies in the desert of Kerman province in southeastern Iran. It is an oasis city, and the map makes that clear. Blocks of date palm gardens surround the streets, walled plots follow irrigation channels, and the wide, empty desert presses in from every side.
The Arg-e Bam, a vast citadel built largely of mud brick, stands at the northeastern edge of the city and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site that also covers the surrounding cultural landscape and its qanats. In 2003 a devastating earthquake destroyed much of the city and the citadel, and large parts of both have since been rebuilt.
