Baoding lies in Hebei Province, southwest of Beijing, on the flat North China Plain. From above, the city is laid out on a broad, regular grid of wide roads and large blocks. The terrain is almost completely flat, so the street pattern is shaped mostly by planning rather than by rivers or hills.
The older centre holds the Zhili Governor's Office, once the seat of the provincial administration during the Qing dynasty, and the Lotus Pond garden. On the map, these appear as compact spaces within the denser central streets. Newer districts extend outward with longer, straighter roads.
