Barbacena is a city in the south of Minas Gerais, Brazil, set high in the Serra da Mantiqueira at over a thousand metres above sea level. On a map, the terrain shapes nearly everything. The city is known as the city of roses, a name that comes from the flower growing that the cool highland climate supports. It is also home to EPCAR, the preparatory school for Brazilian Air Force cadets. A major highway passes nearby, linking the region with Belo Horizonte to the north and Rio de Janeiro to the south.
