Barreiras lies in the far west of Bahia, where the Rio Grande cuts a valley through the high plains of the cerrado. The city grew along the river. On the map, the older streets follow the banks, and a broader grid spreads across the flatter land beyond. Bridges carry the main roads over the water and join the neighbourhoods on either side.
Today Barreiras is a regional centre for one of Brazil's large agricultural frontiers, where farms on the western Bahia plateau grow soy, cotton and corn. Toward the edge of the urban area, the grid loosens into open lots, farm roads and stretches of cerrado vegetation. The escarpments of the plateau rise above the river valley.
