Bieńczyce Map Poster & Print
Bieńczyce is a district in Kraków's Nowa Huta, the planned city built in the post-war years to house the workers of a huge steelworks. From above, its structure is unmistakable: large residential estates, known as osiedla, laid out as clusters of apartment blocks set around shared green spaces and linked by broad, straight roads.
The district is home to the Arka Pana, or Lord's Ark, a church shaped like a ship that was consecrated in 1977. It was built after a long struggle by local residents, at a time when the authorities intended Nowa Huta to have no churches, and it remains one of the best-known buildings in the area.
A Bieńczyce map poster shows socialist-era urban planning at its clearest. Repeated block shapes, generous open spaces and wide avenues create an ordered, rhythmic pattern. In black and white, the design reads like an architect's plan, a very different image from Kraków's medieval centre.
