Boende is the capital of Tshuapa Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and it lies on the Tshuapa River deep within the equatorial forest. From above, the town appears as a modest opening in the green, with its streets reaching back from the riverbank and the water curving past on its slow way toward the Congo.
The river has long been the main route in and out, and the waterfront is where boats and trade meet the town. An airstrip gives another link to the rest of the country, and on the map its straight line contrasts with the soft, winding shapes of the river and forest tracks.
