Borna lies south of Leipzig in Saxony, in a landscape long shaped by lignite mining. The town has a compact historic centre with a market square and a ring of old streets, surrounded by later residential and industrial districts. On several sides, the map shows large lakes formed in former open-cast mines, part of what is now called the Leipzig New Lakeland.
Mining transformed the area for most of the twentieth century and wiped out several nearby villages. One of their churches, the medieval Emmaus church from Heuersdorf, was moved in one piece to Borna in 2007 and now stands in the town centre. It is a well-known example of how the region has dealt with its mining past.
