Brackel is a district on the eastern side of Dortmund, and its map reads as a series of former villages that grew together. Small older cores with irregular streets are surrounded by later housing estates, allotment gardens and patches of woodland and fields. Brackel feels less dense than the inner city to the west.
The district lies along the Hellweg, a medieval trade route that once ran across Westphalia. Brackel itself has a long history as a royal estate from the early Middle Ages. Main roads and a light rail line connect it with central Dortmund and give the map strong east–west axes.
