Brad is a small town in Hunedoara County, western Romania, at the edge of the Apuseni Mountains. It lies in the valley of the Crișul Alb river, in the area known as the Golden Quadrilateral, where gold has been mined since antiquity. The town's Gold Museum holds a well-known collection of natural gold specimens.
On a map, Brad follows the valley. The river and the main road run through its length, and streets branch up the hillsides as far as the slope allows. The centre is compact, while residential areas and former mining sites spread along side valleys into the surrounding wooded hills.
