Buenaventura is Colombia's main port on the Pacific, and its map is shaped almost entirely by water. The historic centre and the port facilities stand on Cascajal Island, at the edge of a broad bay, while newer districts spread across the mainland to the east. Bridges link the two, and the coastline between them is broken up by estuaries and tidal channels rather than a clean shoreline.
The surrounding region is one of the rainiest in the Americas, and the land around the city is covered with forest and mangroves that appear on the map as a quiet, empty field around the streets.
