Buenos Aires sits on the western shore of the Río de la Plata, an estuary so wide it looks like the sea on a map. The city itself is a nearly endless grid of square blocks, known locally as manzanas. This pattern is broken only by a few diagonal avenues, parks and rail lines, which makes the map both simple and dense.
Avenida 9 de Julio cuts through the centre as one of the widest streets in the world. Around Plaza de Mayo, the historic core keeps a tighter layout near the river.
