Bukavu sits where Lake Kivu narrows at its southern end and drains into the Ruzizi River. The shoreline here is anything but straight. Several peninsulas reach into the water like the fingers of a hand, and the city has settled onto them and onto the steep hills behind. Streets follow the slopes rather than a grid, winding up hillsides and along the ridges of each peninsula. The lower districts near the water hold older, colonial-era avenues and villas, while dense neighbourhoods climb higher. Across the narrow Ruzizi lies the Rwandan town of Rusizi, linked to Bukavu by bridges over the river.
